Alexander Kitroeff

Alexander Kitroeff is Professor Emeritus of History at Haverford College in Pennsylvania. He received a D.Phil. in history from Oxford University in 1984. He specializes in the history of identity in Modern Greece and especially its diaspora.

He has taught at the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College, City University of New York, at the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University, at the Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies at New York University, at the American College of Greece College Year in Athens. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora from 1980 through 2013 when it ceased publication.

The titles of his books are: The Greeks in Egypt: Ethnicity & Class 1919-1937 (1989), Griegos en América (1994), Wrestling with the Ancients: Modern Greek Identity & the Olympics (2004), Hellas Evropi Panathinaikos 100 Chronia Helleniki Istoria (2010), The Greeks and the Making of Modern Egypt (2019) also published in Arabic and in Greek, The Greek Orthodox Church in America: A Modern History (2020), The History of AHEPA 1922-2022 A Century of Service (2022 & 2nd edition 2023).

He has served as the historical consultant in five documentary films directed by Maria Iliou: “The Journey: the Greek Dream in America,” Smyrna: the Destruction of a Cosmopolitan City,” “From Both Sides of the Aegean: Greece & Turkey, Expulsion and Population Exchange,” “Agapimeni Theia Lena: E Zoi kai to Ergo tis Antigonis Metaxa,” “Athens for East to West 1821-1896,” “Athens and the Great Idea 1896-1922” and for the corresponding pho exhibits shown at the Benaki Museum. He was also the historical consultant for the ten-part ERT TV series “Routes of the Greek Diaspora” about the Greeks in America, directed by Chronis Pechlivanidis and presented by Maya Tsocli. In 2002 he received the Archbishop Iakovos Award for Excellence from the Greek-American organization Leadership 100. He is completing a biography of Greek-America maestro Peter Tiboris and working on a book on Greek-owned diner restaurants in America.
